The United States Commerce Department will open four Regional U.S. Patent offices to speed up the patent process and help American businesses innovate, grow and create jobs. This is a first for the USPTO, who will expand their operations outside of Washington DC. The regional offices will be in located in Dallas, Denver, Silicon Valley and Detroit. The first regional office to open was Detroit and had its cutting ribbon ceremony on July 13, 2012.The mission of opening the regional offices is to have centers where innovation and creativity can be nurtured. It will help protect and foster American innovation in the global marketplace by assisting businesses cut through red tape. The regional offices will create new economic opportunities in each of the local communities.Next month, the federal government will open a temporary patent office branch in Menlo Park. The permanent office has not been decided yet; however there are many owners of buildings who have shown interest. Michelle Lee, a former IP lawyer at Google Inc., who built the company’s patent legal team from scratch, will be the Director of the Silicon Valley U.S Patent and Trademark Office.
